What is Text Neck?

Text neck is a disorder where the continual use of technology causes neck pain and discomfort. Often, it can cause more than soreness which may lead to actual injury. This results from the posture people are in when they use technology, specifically phones, and tablets, hence the name “text neck”. With the neck constantly bent over, this may cause stiffness, soreness and, worse, physical injury. Moreover, text neck isn’t just a cautionary tale that parents tell their kids to keep them off phones and tablets, it is a serious issue which causes pain and discomfort daily, and leads to a long-term spine damage.

Untreated text neck may lead to long-term forward neck posture which can lead to disc herniation and pinched nerves. This can also result in unnatural curve or reversal of the normal curvature in the neck. Comparing x-rays to a normal spine, which has a subtle curve, people who suffer from text neck instead have an unnatural straight spine, if not, reversed. This is due to the weight that your head applies to the neck, which puts pressure on the spine which is equivalent to 60 pounds of additional weight on it. Typically, our head weighs about 12 pounds.

People who suffer from text neck feel pain, discomfort, and tightness in the neck, shoulders, and areas of the upper back. This also affects the nervous system which leads to pain and discomfort all over the body which pose a serious health threat.

Symptoms of Text Neck

Symptoms of text neck may appear as tightness and numbness in the shoulders, soreness in the neck, chronic headache, pain in the neck, shoulders and upper back, and physical manifestations such as a curved spine. These symptoms are quite alarming since merely using mobile devices can cause them. The severity of these symptoms are different for each person and tend to be more with people who use devices more.

Prevention and Treatment

Since it will be impossible to curb our usage of devices, which is the primary cause of text neck, people who suffer from it may perform neck stretches throughout the day to release the tension and pain, and most importantly, while using such devices. Proper posture also helps in preventing text neck. Making sure that your phone or device is elevated at eye level for prolonged use can help with avoiding the neck to be in a curved position.

Taking breaks between sessions also allows the neck to recover its natural shape and relieve stress. Exercising the upper part of the body, particularly the neck, can help with limbering the joints and allowing more flexibility.
